CHICAGO (AP) - A federal judge has agreed to enter a temporary restraining order to halt the movement of residents out of a southern Illinois institution for the developmentally disabled.
U.S. District Judge Marvin Aspen's Thursday action will continue a move announced last week to stop transfers from Murray Developmental Center in Centralia until a hearing is held on an injunction.
Gov. Pat Quinn ordered the facility closed last year to save money. Parents of Murray residents sued to stop or delay the closure, saying residents wouldn't get the care they needed elsewhere.
The parents' lawyer says the move will allow the "status quo to be maintained at Murray."
The state's Human Services Department called the decision "short term" and said it is looking forward to making a strong case before the court.
