This is International Assistance Dog Week! August 7-13, 2011

The week of August 7-13, 2011, celebrates International Assistance Dog Week (IADW). IADW was created to recognize the hardworking, devoted assistance dogs that help people with physical limitations/disabilities every day.

To the people they service, assistance dogs serve as trusted companions, helpers, aides, and even “friends.”

In addition to recognizing the assistance dogs themselves, IADW also strives to raise awareness and educate the public about assistance dogs, as well as to honor the “puppy raisers” and trainers of the dogs.

International Assistance Dog Week began due to the efforts of Marcie Davis, a paraplegic for over 35 years, who owns her own consulting firm and authored the book Working Like Dogs: The Service Dog Guidebook, a resource book detailing personal stories and providing practical information about assistance dogs. To read an interview with Marcie Davis, look for the August 2011 issue of New Mobility Magazine.
