Illinois Hunters with Disabilities get a day of hunting

by Todd Tumminia; KFVS12; Nov 29, 2013

Hunters with disabilities got a special treat Friday in southern Illinois.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources closed Touch of Nature just to them.

More than 30 hunters came out to participate in the annual event. Each hunter was paired with a partner to assist with whatever needs they may have.

Some hunters even drove quite a ways just to be part of the day.

"It's just a phenomenal opportunity for people with disabilities to get out and enjoy nature and hunt," Charlie Johnson said. "It's something that I normally don't get to do where as my son gets to do it whenever he wants."

"For him to have been through what he's been through and still be able to do this, it's labeling a right he will always have," Charlie Johnson Jr. said.

The hunting weekend runs from Friday afternoon through Sunday evening.
