Woman Creates ‘Sensory Shield’ To Cope During Public Transit Commute

When the sensory stimulation of riding public transportation became too much for Lisa Daly, she got creative.

The Washington, D.C. attorney with autism and sensory processing disorder developed her own “shield” to put a physical barrier between her and other passengers on the crowded trains that make up the region’s Metro system.

Daly can sit on one half of the device so she doesn’t have to touch the seats on the train. The other portion of the L-shaped shield stands vertically between her and the next passenger so that there’s no risk of touching.

So far, response to the device has been largely positive, with one train rider telling the Washington NBC affiliate that she’d like a shield of her own so that no one touches her either.
