2012 London Paralympic Games - Day 10 - U.S. Paralympic Team won 11 medals

LONDON – Today the 2012 U.S. Paralympic Team won a total of 11 medals won throughout
six sports bringing the total medal count to 96. Tomorrow marks competition in
the marathon and the rugby gold medal match.

Cycling
The mixed relay was the highlight of Saturday’s road cycling with Team USA winning the mixed H 1-4 team relay. The team of Marianna Davis (Salt Lake City, Utah), Oscar Sanchez (San Diego, Calif.) and Matthew Updike (Denver, Colo.) won gold with a time of 30:07. Steven Peace (San Diego, Calif.) was fifth in the men’s mixed T1-2 road cycle at Brands Hatch Saturday.

Swimming
Swimming accounted for three medals Saturday. Victoria Arlen (Exeter, N.H.) was golden in
the women’s 100m freestyle (S8). Arlen now has four medals at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Roy Perkins (Del Mar, Calif.) also medaled Saturday in the men’s 100m freestyle (S5), hitting the wall in 1:14.78 behind Brazil’s Daniel Dias. Kelley Becherer (Sheboygan, Wis.) came in third to pull in another medal for the U.S. in the women’s 100 breaststroke S13. Becherer added a bronze, bringing her medal count to four.

Track & Field
Team USA took home five medals on the last night of competition in the Olympic Stadium for the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Raymond Martin (Jersey City, N.J.) won his fourth gold medal of the Games in the men’s 200m (T46), Jeff Skiba (Sammamish, Wash.) won silver in the high jump (F44), and Tatyana McFadden (Baltimore, Md.) won bronze in the 100m (T54). In
the men’s 400m (T44) U.S. teammates Blake Leeper (Kingston, Tenn.), David Prince (Brandon, Fla.), and Jarryd Wallace (Athens, Ga.) raced against South Africa’s Oscar Pistorius in front of an electric crowd. While Pistorius ran away with the gold medal, finishing with a personal record time of 46.68 seconds, Leeper improved upon his Americas’ regional record finishing with a time of 50.14 to win silver, and Prince set a T44 world record with a time of 50.61 to win bronze. U.S. teammate Wallace finished sixth clocking in at 53.90 seconds.

In the men’s high jump were Richard Browne (Jackson, Miss.) and Jeff Skiba, the defending champion from Beijing, who took second place in the competition. Skiba cleared 2.04
meters but lost to Maciej Lepiato of Poland who set a new world record of 2.12 meters. Browne finished in ninth overall.

In the women’s 400m (T53) final, Anjali Forber-Pratt (Natick, Mass.), Jessica Galli (Champaign, Ill.), and Shirley Riley (Tucson, Ariz.) all raced for Team USA. The three missed the medal stand with Forber-Pratt finishing seventh, Galli finished fifth, and Reilly finished fourth.

Men’s Wheelchair Basketball
The U.S. Paralympic Men’s Wheelchair Basketball Team overcame Great Britain to win
the bronze, 61-46, on Saturday. Matt Scott (Detroit, Mich.) led the U.S. in overall scoring chipping in 20 points. Jeremy Lade (Oconto, Wis.) and captain William Waller (Hudson, Ohio) scored in the double digits posting 15 and 12 points respectively.

Wheelchair Rugby
The .S. squad fell to Canada 49-50 on Saturday and the U.S. will now face Japan on Sunday for the bronze as Canada moves on to face Australia for the gold.

Wheelchair Tennis
On the hottest day of the 2012 Paralympic Games, Team USA’s David Wagner
(Hillsboro, Ore.) the #1 seed in the quad singles division won a silver medal bringing his Paralympic collection to five. Wagner fought well, but fell to the hands of the #2 seed Noam Gershony in 56 minutes 3-6, 1-6.
