2012 London Paralympic Games - Day 9 - U.S. Paralympic Team adds 14 medals to its count

LONDON – Today the 2012 U.S. Paralympic Team won a total of 14 medals, including six in swimming, four in track & field, two in cycling, one in wheelchair tennis and one in sitting volleyball. Below is a brief recap of today’s action.

Cycling
American cyclists Marianna “Muffy” Davis (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Monica Bascio (Evergreen, Colo.) each collected their second road cycling medals of these Games after finishing first and second in today’s individual H 1-3 road race from Brand’s Hatch. Davis finished action with a time of 1:41.34 while Bascio crossed the line at 1:42.07. Great Britain’s Rachel Morris was third with a time of 1:43.08. This is Davis’ second gold medal of the London Games and Bascio’s second silver. Davis won the individual H 1-2 time trial and Bascio took silver in the H3 time trial on Wednesday. The 1-2 finish by the Americans today now takes the overall U.S. road cycling medal total to 11, second only to Germany which currently has 12..

Swimming
Bradley Snyder (St. Petersburg, Fla.) won his second gold medal of the 2012 Paralympic Games in his favorite event, the men’s 400m freestyle S11. Snyder was injured exactly a year ago on a deployment in Afghanistan. Roy Perkins (Del Mar, Calif.) won silver, his third overall medal, on Friday in the men’s 50m butterfly. Tucker Dupree (Raleigh, N.C.) won bronze in the men’s 50m butterfly S12.

The women landed two on the podium in the women’s 200m IM with Rebecca Meyers (Timonium, Md.) hitting the wall in 2:30.13 good for silver, and Kelly Becherer (Sheboygan, Wis.) was right behind for the bronze.

The women’s 4x100m medley relay also won a bronze. Team members included Susan Beth Scott (Cape Girardeau, Mich.), Anna Johannes Alexandria, Va.), Jessica Long (Baltimore, Md.) and Mallory Weggemann (Eagan, Minn.).

Track & Field
Tatyana McFadden (Clarksville, Md.) was a crowd favorite at Olympic stadium, picking up her third gold medal in three events. McFadden cruised to victory in 3:36.42. Shirley Reilly (Los Gatos, Calif.) joined her on the podium in third pushing to a 3:37.03 finish. Raymond Martin (Jersey City, N.J.) also put in a gold medal performance in the men’s 800m T52. Zena Cole (Toledo, Ohio), who made her Games debut in London, won bronze in the women’s discus (F51/52/53) competition,

Women’s Wheelchair Basketball
The U.S. Paralympic Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team gave everything they had, but will leave London without a medal after falling to The Netherlands in the bronze medal match, 71-47. The U.S. was led in scoring by Rebecca Murray (Germantown, Wis.) who finished with 19 points on 9-for-18 shooting, along with six rebounds and four assists. She led the team in scoring throughout the Games with 19.1 points per game. Germany defeated Australia, 58-44, in the gold medal game.

Wheelchair Rugby
Team USA defeated France, 70-44, in mixed pool competition. The U.S. squad will face Canada tomorrow. Chance Sumner (Lakewood, Colo.) was the highest scorer with 11 points.

Wheelchair Tennis
Three-time U.S. Paralympian Nick Taylor (Wichita, Ks.) won the bronze medal in Quad singles competition at the 2012 Paralympics in London, defeating Shraga Weinberg of Israel 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the bronze medal match. This marks Taylor’s first medal performance in the Quad Singles Division in the Paralympic Games. With the win, Taylor will be taking home his second medal of the London Games. Yesterday, he and Quad Doubles partner David Wagner captured their third consecutive gold medal.
