Ill. activists want autism-specific funding:
Associated Press | Posted: Thursday, April 14, 2011

Activists are trying to make sure Illinois doesn't cut spending on autism programs. Step one is figuring out just how much the state spends now.

Very little state money is set aside specifically for autism. Broad education and human services programs address the condition, making it hard to figure out total spending.

Legislators and autism activists said Thursday they need more detail.

They also warned of a significant divide in autism resources between the Chicago area and the rest of the state.

Autism is a developmental disability that affects social communication and cognitive functions. About one in every 110 births falls somewhere on the spectrum of autism disorders.
