Chicago ADAPT protests the harmful OT for Personal Care Attendants 2016 guidelines by State of Illinois

Chicago ADAPT, while supportive of Overtime pay for Personal Care Attendants, protests the harmful guidelines proposed by the State of Illinois that will take consumer control of their health and their bodies away from them and put them at risk of institutionalization.

The fact that the budget crisis is being used as an excuse to weaken HSP is unacceptable. This past Monday (Apr 18, 2016), Chicago ADAPT, the Alliance for Community Services and SEIU led an action at the Chicago offices of DHS, as well as the law firm offices of Illinois House Minority Leader Durkin, to highlight the overtime problem and the need for a state budget solution that helps people with disabilities.
How can you help? You should know that there are likely many HSP customers who have gotten the letters about overtime, and yet they may face serious consequences because they will not be in compliance on May 1. Many people get letters from the State, like the overtime letters, and do not understand them due to their disability. Often, people are afraid of change and may simply sit on mail until it is too late. It is really important to get the word out in your community that this policy is going into effect, and to figure out when HSP customers do not understand what is going on.

If you know someone who is in HSP but either does not understand the policy or is not getting help from DHS-DRS, please have them contact the Access Living Home and Community Ombudsmen at (312) 640-2152 or ombudsman@accessliving.org.
