The value of caretakers
The position on unions in a commentary published on Jan. 30 is so skewed that it prevents the authors from seeing the value of consumer directed Home Services Programs. (“Making millions off the disabled")
I am a person with a disability who works full-time and lives in my own home with the support of personal assistants. I have reliable personal assistants because of a strong Home Services Programs.
Two decades ago, personal assistants were paid a pittance. Now, we have a strong program in Illinois that ensures people with disabilities maintain control over their services while at the same time increasing wages and benefits for workers. This has reduced disruptive turnover and has increased the supply of workers at a time when demand for services continues to escalate.
Last week, the Supreme Court heard arguments in Harris v. Quinn. A negative ruling threatens to undo a system that allows people with disabilities to hire and fire their personal assistants while the State handles administrative responsibilities. The decision also threatens collective bargaining. I urge the court to affirm the decision and the independence of 30,000 people with disabilities.
