Legislation sponsored by Illinois State Senator William Delgado (D-Chicago) that requires the Capital Development Board to update its accessibility standards to accommodate those with disabilities has been signed into law by Governor Quinn, which will require.
“I sponsored this legislation because I believe there needed to be unification between the standards set forth and Illinois code,” said Delgado. “This will ensure that going forward, all public buildings and apartment buildings meet accessibility standards.”
House Bill 1462 requires the Capital Development Board to begin updating ADA Standards for Accessible Design.
This will require that certain newly constructed or altered buildings that are intended to be used by the public and newly constructed multi-unit apartment buildings must comply with defined accessibility standards.

The Capital Development Board is charged with adopting and publishing these accessibility standards for public facilities and multi-story housing units.
The ADA standards were updated in March 2012. However, the Illinois Accessibility Code has not changed since 1997. This will fix some confusion that has been caused by the discrepancies.
