World Access Project : Providing Mobility & Better Quality of Life for the Disabled & Neglected Youth of Mexico: info

Tens of thousands of people throughout the world are born with, or incur disabilities, that take away their mobility. Many of them don't have the resources to buy a wheelchair, walker or crutches, and are stuck in their house. Their 'world' is often limited to the four walls of their bedroom. For more than 10 years our staff has been providing mobility, supporting and encouraging the disabled poor throughout the world to countries such as Afghanistan, Vietnam, Thailand, El Salvador, Mexico, and others. Because of the poverty and great need in rural Mexico, we have decided to focus our ministry on the impoverished, neglected people with disabilities of Mexico

World Access Project donates used wheelchairs from the United States to the indigenous disabled of Mexico, one person at a time. As they receive wheelchairs they begin to get out of their houses; as we modify their homes they learn how to become part of their neighborhood and community; as schools are made accessible they have the ability to get an education and interact with others; as governments understands the need for streets, sidewalks and businesses to be made accessible. People with disabilities become part of society, and realize they can have a better quality of life. In addition to the needs of people with physical disabilities there are many children who have been neglected, abandoned and abused, forced to live with others, required to work at a very young age to support themselves, and their relatives, and have not had the opportunity to go to school. We are working to provide neglected young people with a place to live, love, and an education.

Volunteers help us with all the activities we do. You are indispensable! We invite volunteers from the United States and Mexico to join us. Individuals, teams, churches, schools, clubs etc. are welcome. You can join us for a week-long trip or stay longer. If you know of an area in Mexico you would like to help people with mobility needs let us know and we can work together. You don’t need to have any special skill or ability, just an open heart. We provide interpreters, food, and accommodations. Spend your next vacation helping someone in whose life you can greatly impact. Join Us! Seeing the smiles and appreciation on their faces, and seeing the tears in their parents eyes, as their children move themselves independently is a life-changing experience for volunteers. It will change your life!

Our long-term desire is to expand and work throughout all of Mexico, to teach employable skills, encourage independence and success. Many wheelchairs have been donated throughout Mexico. We have hosted recreation and sports camps in several different areas, teaching wheelchair basketball, tennis, soccer, baseball and more sports. There are thousands of people who cannot leave their homes and have no resources to change their situation. But there is still great need throughout the country. Our hope is that someday people with disabilities and the neglected youth of Mexico will have accessibility, laws that help and protect them, and an equal opportunity at life. You can help by donating a wheelchair, collecting wheelchairs, volunteering for a trip, donating funds, praying and in many other ways.
