Illinois Group-Home Death of Paul McCann - Prison Sentence for employee Keyun Newble | July 6, 2012

CHARLESTON, Ill. (AP) — A former employee at a group home in eastern Illinois has been sentenced to eight years in prison in the death of a developmentally disabled resident — a case that was the subject of previous 2 Investigators reports.

The Mattoon Journal-Gazette and Times-Courier in Charleston reports 27-year-old Keyun Newble was sentenced Friday in Coles County. Newble was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in April.

Newble admitted pushing the man during a confrontation last year but said he managed to stop a co-worker and co-defendant from beating him even more severely. The victim, Paul McCann, later died from what his family called “torture-like” punishment at the group home in Charleston.

The facility was part of a network of group homes run by the nonprofit Graywood Foundation that came under intense state scrutiny.

The case against Newble’s co-defendant, Marquis Harmon, is still pending.
