Polar Plunge - Brave the cold to benefit Special Olympics | Fox Lake, IL. on Feb 26, 2012

FOX LAKE – Special Olympics supporters are looking for fans of brrr-avery for the Fox Lake Polar Plunge on Feb. 26.

Funds raised from the Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge will benefit Special Olympics Illinois Northeastern Area 13, which serves athletes with intellectual disabilities in Lake and McHenry counties, event organizers said in a news release.

Participants will jump into the waters of Fox Lake at Lake Front Park, 71 Nippersink Blvd., at 1 p.m. Feb. 26. To get involved, register at www.plungeillinois.com.

All Polar Plungers are required to collect a minimum of $75 in donations. Check-in will begin at 11 a.m., and last-minute plungers are welcome, the news release said. Advance registration will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 25 at Fox Lake Park. Lunch will be served free to participants on location after the plunge. Lunch will be available for $5 for others.

Participants are encouraged to come in costume and to form teams. Each team member must raise the minimum of $75 in donations. All team members’ individual fundraising totals will be merged to form a combined team total. Statewide, teams are placed into divisions based on size and are awarded prizes for the most money raised, the news release said.

Each participants receives an official Polar Plunge sweatshirt. There also are incentives for raising more money, with grand prizes including a seven-night trip for two to Riu Negril in Negril, Jamaica, courtesy of Riu Hotels and Resorts and Apple Vacations. The trip includes round-trip airfare, transfers to and from resort, all meals, drinks and more. For every $500 a plunger raises, he or she will receive an entry into the drawing for the grand prize, according to the news release.
