MONTREAL — A family that faced deportation from Canada because one of their daughters has cerebral palsy are being allowed to stay.
A lawyer for the Barlagne family, who have lived in Quebec for six years, announced the news Tuesday.
Stephane Minson said Quebec Immigration Minister Kathleen Weil's involvement played a role in getting Ottawa to process the French family's request for permanent residency.
Eight-year-old Rachel Barlagne suffers from cerebral palsy and had been described by officials as an "excessive burden."
David and Sophie Barlagne, who have one other child, appealed to federal Immigration Minister Jason Kenney last week.
And last Friday, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff, Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe and NDP Leader Jack Layton all urged Kenney to intervene on the family's behalf.
