CHICAGO (AP) — Advocates want Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner's administration to restore a $60 monthly allowance for adults with developmental disabilities who live in state-funded facilities.
People with disabilities use the pocket money for things like haircuts, coffee and movies.
Lawmakers temporarily raised it to $60 last year from $50 for people in group homes and from $30 for residents of intermediate care facilities.
Illinois Department of Human Services spokeswoman Veronica Vera calls the change an "automatic expiration" that should not be "any great surprise."
But disability consultant Ed McManus says the allowance is tangled in the budget standoff between the first-term Republican governor and Democratic leaders in the Legislature.
Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly says if legislative leaders would consider the governor's proposals there would be more "resources to help the most vulnerable."
