The Department of Disability and Human Development (DHD), College of Applied Health Sciences (AHS), University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), is seeking applications for a tenured associate or full professor with an outstanding research background in health disparities for or health promotion with people with disabilities and/or aging.  We seek a candidate with a demonstrated track record in extramural funding and experience in translational research.  Candidates should also have evidence of successful mentorship of students and teaching as well as a record of service. 
This faculty position is part of a Chancellor-sponsored interdisciplinary   cluster hire   entitled "Health Promotion for Racially and Ethnically Diverse Older Adults".    In addition to the faculty appointment in DHD and membership in DHD’s Institute on Disabilities and Human Development (IDHD) the position would include membership in the Center for Research on Health and Aging (CRHA). The cluster hire initiative also includes four additional tenure track faculty specializing in related research in the College of Applied Health Sciences and in the School of Public Health from the following departments: Community Health Sciences, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Health Policy and Administration.
DHD is dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of disability with the goal of removing barriers to the advancement of disabled persons in society. It offers intensive graduate-level academic programs that prepare individuals for positions in research, teaching, and public service in disability fields. The department is home to the first interdisciplinary PhD program in Disability Studies.  The Master of Science in Disability and Human Development offers graduate-level training in disability research and scholarship. We also offer an undergraduate Minor in Disability and Human Development and a continuing education Assistive Technology Certificate Program.
DHD conducts scholarship and community-based service across the spectrum of disability, including advocacy, culture, education, health promotion, history, policy, and technology. Home to a number of active research centers and projects, IDHD/DHD is exploring current and prospective disability policies, conceptual models, and intervention strategies.  Currently IDHD has 12 funded centers and programs including 7 federally funded centers.
CRHA is the campus-wide focal point for research on aging at UIC. It is currently home to 18 faculty from 8 departments and 5 Schools at UIC, including Public Health, Medicine, Nursing, Applied Health Sciences, and Urban Planning and Public Affairs. CRHA has been home to three consecutively funded National Institute on Aging/NIH Roybal Centers for translation research and has been a national and international leader in the development, testing and translation of evidence-based health promotion programs for older adults.

Duties
Applicants must be experts in translational health promotion or health disparities research with disability and or aging populations.  Duties include:  1) Collaborating with other members of the cluster hire to develop an active, externally funded research program relevant to disability and human development; 2) Teaching, supervising, and mentoring graduate students; 3) Developing and teaching courses in disability studies and/or disability and human development; 4) Conducting and publishing research on disability and/or aging, health and related areas; 5) Providing service to the profession/discipline and to the department, college and university; 6) Contributing to the knowledge-base in disability and human development at the local, national and international levels; and 7) Giving invited or peer-reviewed presentations in important national and international forums.

  • Exceptional research and scholarly capacity with a strong track record of external funding in disability and/or aging, health and related areas
  • A distinguished record of publications related to health, health promotion interventions, or health disparities for older minorities and/or persons with disabilities
  • At least 5 years of experience teaching graduate level courses and mentoring graduate level students
