Jazz concert to benefit people with disabilities (IVCIL) in Aug. 24 Peru, Illinois

If you love jazz music and helping people with disabilities, then an event Sunday is for you.

Illinois Valley Center for Independent Living is holding its first ever jazz concert fundraiser featuring “Jazz in Progress.”

“We’re trying to expand our horizons,” explained IVCIL assistant director Brian Szuda. “There’s a lot of fundraisers in the Illinois Valley but when this unique opportunity was presented to us, we decided to give it a whirl.”

IVCIL, like most non-profit organizations dependent upon state grants, have come under difficult financial times. The state funding they rely upon to meet the needs of people with disabilities is under constant threat of being cut due to the state’s poor economy.

In response, IVCIL has tried to pinch its pennies and come up with new fundraising opportunities. Szuda said former IVCIL executive director Donna Joerger knew a member of Jazz in Progress and was able to book the band to come play a fundraiser for them.

“We’re really excited,” Szuda said. “Their music is really good and it’s going to be fun.”
