London 2012 Paralympic Games - Eleven medals for USA on day three

LONDON – The 2012 U.S. Paralympic Team hauled in another 11 medals on day three of the
London 2012 Paralympic Games, bringing its total to 22.

Archery
Thanks to a key quarterfinals victory by Jeff Fabry (Tulare, Calif.) in the compound men's W1 category, Team USA is guaranteed to be shooting in a medal match in the Paralympic Games archery event.

In addition to Fabry’s success, Eric Bennett (Surprise, Ariz.) had a strong showing in Saturday’s early rounds at the Royal Artillery Barracks in London, clinching a quarterfinals berth.

Women’s standing recurve competitor Lee Ford (Perry, Ga.) got off to a strong start this morning, putting up a 6-5 win in the 1/16th over Katharina Schett (GER). Ford then fell to Huilian Yan (CHI) in the 1/8 round.


Cycling
U.S. Army veteran Jennifer Schuble (Homewood, Ala.) won the silver medal in the women's individual C4-5 500m time trial at the London 2012 Paralympic Games on Saturday. It is the fourth medal of the Games for the U.S. track cycling team, following a gold won by Joseph Berenyi (Aurora, Ill.), silver by Megan Fisher (Missoula, Mont.) and a bronze from
Allison Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo.) over the first two days of competition.

Judo
Dartanyon Crockett (Cleveland, Ohio), competing in the men's -90kg, won the first medal of the London 2012 Paralympic Games for USA Judo, taking bronze. Later Saturday, Myles Porter (Fremont, Ohio) won silver, narrowly missed the podium's top spot, falling in the men’s 100kg gold medal fight to Korean Gwang-Geun Choi.

Rowing
In the last repechage of the morning, the U.S. legs, trunk and arms mixed four with coxswain crew edged out France in the sprint for the second place. Marine Corps veteran Rob Jones (Lovettsville, Va.) and Oksana Masters (Buffalo, N.Y.) will also have their shot at a medal Sunday, following an impressive repechage win in the trunk and arms mixed double sculls, after finishing second Saturday.

Sailing
On the first day of racing at the 2012 Paralympic Games in Weymouth and Portland, U.K., the U.S. Paralympic Sailing Team holds 4th place in all three events: Jen French (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and JP Creignou (St. Petersburg, Fla.) 4th in the SKUD-18, Mark LeBlanc (New Orleans, La.) 4th in the 2.4mR and Paul Callahan (Cape Coral, Fla.), Tom Brown (Castine, Maine) and Bradley Johnson (Pompano Beach, Fla.) 4th in the Sonar. Two races were held in each event, with 11 races total scheduled through Sept. 6.


Shooting
Sergeant First Class Josh Olson (Spokane, Wash.) knew the field would be tough in Mixed 10m Air Rifle Prone SH1. Competing in his first event in his first Paralympic Games as the first active
duty solider ever to represent the United States in the Games, Olson finished 28th in the event with 595 points.

Sitting Volleyball
The U.S. women’s sitting volleyball team was victorious over Slovenia Saturday at ExCel,
sweeping the series 3-0. The win comes after the team fell to China on Friday. The U.S. will face Brazil in its final pool play game on Monday.

Soccer (Seven-a-side)
The Ukrainian team was dominant in today’s match, defeating the American team 9-0
and displaying why they are once again favored to win gold at these Games.

After playing Brazil on September 3, the U.S will take on the final team in Group
B, host country Great Britain on September 5. The top four teams in pool play
will advance to the semifinal round which begins on September 7.


Swimming
American Jessica Long (Baltimore, Md.) capped off another big night in the pool for the U.S. swim team, winning her third gold medal of the London 2012 Paralympic Games, this time in the 100 meter breaststroke (S8). Her gold was a part of a five medal night for U.S. swimmers.



Collecting the first gold for Team USA on Saturday was Kelley Becherer (Sheboygan, Wis.) who successfully defended her Paralympic title in the 50m freestyle (S13), finishing in 27.46. Victoria Arlen (Exeter, N.H.) won her first medal of the Games, a silver in the 400m freestyle (S6). Navy Lt. Brad Synder (St. Petersburg, Fla.) who lost his vision just one year ago while deployed in Afghanistan, landed himself on the podium again after finishing second in the 50m freestyle (S11)
with a personal best time of 25.93. Roy Perkins (Del Mar, Calif.) finished third in the men’s
200M freestyle (S5) with a time of 2:43.14.

Track & Field
The second day of action at Olympic Stadium began with American sprinter Shaquille Vance (Houston, Miss.) capturing silver in the men’s T42 200-meter final in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Team USA picked up more hardware Saturday night at the Olympic Stadium with two bronze medals, won by Kerry Morgan (St. Louis, Mo.) in the women’s 200m final (T52) and
Angela Madsen (Long Beach, Calif.) in the women’s shot put (F54/55/56).

Men’s Wheelchair Basketball
Team USA defeated South Africa 91-29 in men's wheelchair basketball. The win improved the Americans to 2-1 in the tournament with Australia, the reigning Paralympic gold medalists, slated for Sept. 2.

Women’s Wheelchair Basketball
The 2012 U.S. Paralympic Women's Wheelchair Basketball Team bounced back from yesterday's
loss against Germany by handily topping Mexico, 67-33. Sunday the team has a day off, and they'll continue action on Monday against China.
