The "R" Word - Being Heard with The Social Challenge, Part II : More than a word to people with developmental disabilities

YouTube Uploaded by lifemywayil on Aug 11, 2011

As all of you know, one of the coolest aspects about The Social Challenge is that we're not simply talking at people, but instead we're creating a dialogue between those in the community and those outside of it. Without further ado, here are some of our favorite new comments featured on the site:

EB says: The 'R' word cuts like a knife like all negative phrases. It should never be used, ever.

MB says: It hurts your self esteem if people call you a retard. We need to watch our language and critically examine what we're really saying when we call things retarded, gay, etc.

JG says: People should stand up for others...I know freedom of speech is a right but not to the extent of causing harm to others that have no one to help them. The people on these sites should be held accountable for their words.

JW says: I think the r-word is every bit as offensive as the n-word or the f-word. Why use any of these words?

How will you make your voice heard? Here's an idea: head on over to www.thesocialchallenge, right now, and let us know what's on your mind! See you next week, folks!

The Social Challenge is a Twitter-based campaign aimed at curbing the use of the r-word in social media. Visitors to the site can see a live Twitter stream of real-time tweets containing the r-word. They can then send a message to those tweeters asking them to reconsider their choice of language
