StreetWise : May 2011

Mayor-Elect Rahm Emanuel has asked Karen Tamley to stay on in her role as Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD). She was originally appointed to the post by Richard M. Daley in March of 2005. Commissioner Tamley holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley. As a person with a disability, she has spent her career working to assure that no aspect of society limits the rights of those with a disability. In response to her reappointment the commissioner stated, “I will continue to work hard to advance our goal of making Chicago a welcoming, inclusive and accessible city for people with all types of disabilities.”

Some of the services offered by the MOPD include: accessibility compliance, accessible housing, deaf and hard of hearing services, employment services, training, and youth services. The department’s website states that, “MOPD promotes total access, full participation and equal opportunity for people with all types of disabilities with the goal of making Chicago the most accessible city in the nation.” Karen Tamley was responsible for Chicago receiving the 2007 Accessible America Award from the National Organization on Disability.
