Illinois Legislators to Host Community Dialogue for Parents of Children with Special Needs - VERNON HILLS - Sept 10, 2015

VERNON HILLS, Ill. - State Rep. Carol Sente, D-Vernon Hills, is partnering with state Sen. Terry Link, D-Waukegan and state Rep. Rita Mayfield, D-Waukegan, to host a "Developmental Disabilities: Ask the Experts!" discussion focused on issues faced by members of the developmentally disabled community.

The event will be held on Thursday, Sept. 10 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Sullivan Community Center, located at 635 Aspen Drive in Vernon Hills.

"Our dialogue will help increase awareness of the challenges faced by persons with special needs, as well as the federal, state and local resources available to help them live as comfortably and independently as possible," Sente said. "It is easy to become overwhelmed while navigating the numerous programs and services available in order to choose what is best for your loved one. It is my hope that this event will help to shed some light on the process and answer questions that parents or guardians might have."
Residents are invited to join experts, families and local legislators for a group discussion on Supplemental Security Income (SSI), disability services, PUNS placement, day and residential services, home-based care and other issues facing persons with developmental disabilities and their families.
