Center for Independence (CIL) Funding - Disability Action Alert for 2015 Funding!

as shared by National Council on Independent Living

Action Alert: Independent Living Funding

With the lame duck Congress back in session and the continuing resolution set to expire on December 11, Congress must act on FY15 appropriations. House and Senate Appropriations Chairs are reportedly working on a funding package that includes a full-year omnibus appropriations bill including 11 of the 12 appropriations bills. The bill is scheduled to be released today, with the House scheduled to vote on Wednesday, and the Senate on Thursday. Key deliberations are taking place this week, and we need to let Congress know that level funding for the Independent Living program is not enough - the IL Program is vital and needs a funding increase!

Our elected officials need to understand that investing in Independent Living is essential. America’s Independent Living Program increases access to home and community based services and other resources that allow people to live independently. The IL Program ensures the rights of people with disabilities, and it saves the federal government millions of dollars a year!

CILs are still operating on decreased budgets from previous cuts, and it is more important than ever that funding be increased now. NCIL is continuing to push Congress and the Administration to invest an additional $200 million dollars in the Independent Living program and programs that empower people with disabilities. It’s extremely important for Congress to hear from their constituents around the country, so call your Senator or Congressperson and ask them to demand increased IL funding in the FY15 budget. Make sure our voices are heard!
