Disability and Youth Issues Panel Event! August 28th, 2013 - Access Living of Chicago - RSVP

On Wednesday, August 28th, Access Living’s youth organizing group Advance Youth Leadership Power (AYLP) will host the Endependence Through Youth Advocacy Panel Discussion on issues affecting young people with disabilities, in partnership with the Chicago Freedom School. This is a unique opportunity to hear from young people who have disabilities on the issues that matter to them, and to hear from non-disabled allies.

The panel session will be comprised of AYLP members and moderated by youth from the Chicago Freedom School. Today, more than ever before, young people and their families are asking what life will be like after high school is over. The unemployment rate among people with disabilities continues to be higher than for people without disabilities. Some people with disabilities are funneled into sheltered workshops that pay less than minimum wage. For those on SSI, there is exactly zero housing that is truly affordable so they can live on their own. And, the rate of young people with disabilities being funneled into institutions or the prison industrial complex is a significant indicator that the social supports we have are not enough.

We have some serious topics to discuss, and YOU should join us to be part of the conversation.
