Illinois 'End The Word' Day: Fighting To End The 'R-Word' (VIDEO) | March 7, 2012

Wednesday, March 7 marks the annual "Spread the Word to End the Word" advocacy day, where mental health activists and support agencies campaign for pledges to end "hate speech" against people with developmental disabilities.

The initiative seeks to end the use of "retard" and "retarded" as derisive terms, and to educate about how the term has evolved from a clinical word to hate speech.

To reinforce the campaign's importance, clients and providers at Clearbrook, Illinois' largest provider of services, programs and support for children and adults with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and other intellectual or developmental disabilities, created a video about the "R-word," and the impact of its misuse.
