About Us

Welcome to the Voices of Vision Talking Book Center!

Our website contains information about our program, related services, and news of interest to our readers. Support for the program and website is provided by funds awarded by the Illinois State Library, a department of the Office of Secretary of State, using funds provided by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, under the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).

Voices of Vision is part of a statewide and national network of libraries which provide the talking book and braille service.

Voices of Vision is one of three subregional libraries in Illinois working with the Illinois State Library Talking Book and Braille Service and the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped to provide this service. The service is administered locally by the DuPage Library System.

Voices of Vision serves eligible readers in a twelve county area: Boone, Cook (except Chicago), DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, LaSalle, McHenry, and Will counties.

There’s More Than One Way to Read a Book!

We provide free library service to persons unable to read or use conventional print material due to a visual or physical disability. There is no cost to eligible readers. For more information on eligibility use the How to Apply link.

Our collection includes many types of popular fiction and nonfiction. Formats and related services include:

• Books on talking book audio cassettes and in digital format and the playback equipment needed to listen to them

• Braille books

• Recorded and braille magazines

• Recorded and braille books and magazines for children

• Catalogs and bibliographies (with order forms) listing materials available for loan

• Online catalog of the Illinois State Library Talking Book and Braille Service and the Illinois Talking Book Centers.

• Reader advisory service and assistance in selecting books

Talking books and magazines, braille books and magazines, catalogs, and playback equipment are mailed to registered readers postage free as “free matter for the blind or handicapped” and may be returned in the same way. Materials are sent with a removable address card that, when turned over and reinserted, will show the Talking Book Center’s name and address for return mailing.

Other programs and services include:

•Let’s Talk Books! Assistance with selecting books for book discussion groups
