“We are still reeling from the wonderful experience of The Chicago Lighthouse! Beginning with the warmth of our original phone call, we knew we were in nurturing hands.”

-Low Vision Clinic Patients

The Low Vision Clinic’s Dr. Alfred A. Rosenbloom Low Vision Rehabilitation Service is dedicated to maximizing the remaining vision of someone who has low vision by providing the most advanced devices and professional services to patients.

The service’s trained professionals assist individuals of all ages with reduced vision caused by any eye disease or injury either congenital or acquired. Common diseases include age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

Its range of services and extraordinary expertise of doctors have made the Dr. Alfred A. Rosenbloom Low Vision Rehabilitation Service a model for low vision clinics throughout the country.

Background
Founded in 1954, The Chicago Lighthouse Low Vision Clinic was the first of its kind in the Midwest and is today the oldest in the country. Helen Keller dedicated the building in 1954 and was given her first exposure to low vision devices by the Low Vision Rehabilitation Service.

On July 12, 2004, The Chicago Lighthouse Low Vision Clinic dedicated the Panoramic™ 200, state-of-the-art equipment that captures a high-resolution digital image of the entire retina without dilation. This allows us to verify pathology and educate our patients while still performing a low vision exam, which cannot be done in conjunction with dilation.

At the Centennial Symposium Dinner, on October 3, 2006, the Board of Directors of The Chicago Lighthouse saluted Dr. Alfred A. Rosenbloom (who continues to see patients today) for his many contributions to Low Vision Service, to the thousands of patients he has served, and the field of Low Vision across the world. To honor his many accomplishments, The Low Vision Rehabilitation Service was named the Dr. Alfred A. Rosenbloom Low Vision Rehabilitation Service.
